Holy shit. I thought I loved folklore - and I still do. And the initial listens to evermore are pulling it ahead immediately. Can we just crown Taylor Swift the patron saint of wronged women everywhere? The power of music can be incredibly strong and her songwriting (along with her strategy - dropping not one but TWO surprise albums during quarantine? She's the smartest businesswoman in the world. I said what I said.) just stands head and shoulders above everyone else in the game.

It's still early and I want more time with it. AND there are some clear favorites right off the bat: happiness, tolerate it, evermore (feat. Bon Iver), and willow. No body, no crime is also a favorite given it's undeniable Goodbye Earl vibes. But the lyrics from those first four are haunting and perfect at the same time. Some favorites below:

happiness - "Tell me, when did your winning smile / Become a smirk / When did all our lessons start to look like weapons / Pointed at my deepest hurt? / I hope she'll be your beautiful fool / Who takes my spot next to you / No, I didn't mean that / Sorry, I can't see facts through all of my fury / You haven't met the new me yet"
And "And I pulled your body into mine / Every goddamn night, now I get fake niceties / No one teaches you what to do / When a good man hurts you"
And finally "All you want from me now is the green light of forgiveness"

tolerate it - "I greet you with a battle hero's welcome / I take your indiscretions all in good fun / I sit and listen, I polish plates until them gleam and glisten / You're so much older and wiser than I / I wait by the door like I'm just a kid / Use my best colors for your portrait / Lay the table with the fancy shit / And watch you tolerate it / If it's all in my head tell me now / Tell me I've got it wrong somehow / I know my love should be celebrated / But you tolerate it"

evermore - Honestly the whole thing but specifically, "I replay my footsteps on each stepping stone / Trying to find the one where I went wrong / Writing letters / Addressed to the fire / And I was catching my breath / Staring out an open window / Catching my death / And I couldn't be sure/ I had a feeling so peculiar / That this pain would be for / Evermore"

willow - "The more you say, the less I know / Wherever you stray, I follow / I'm begging for you to take my hand / Wreck my plans, that's my man"

It's poetry! Tragic storytelling at its finest and this sounds silly but I feel so grateful for both folklore and evermore this year. I get so tired of journaling "why did this happen?", "why her?", etc, over and over again. But these songs are art and listening to art over and over again is a gift.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend whether you are celebrating Swiftmas or not.
